El Rito Home for sale with El Rito Creek Frontage

by Jarred Conley on February 17, 2010

Nestled in the picturesque Northern New Mexico town of El Rito lays this 6.59 acre country estate. Idyllically sited, the property is bordered by the El Rito Creek & the Carson National Forest.

The lodge-style home boasts a large great room with a massive territorial-style fireplace, sandstone hearth, hand-carved walnut mantel, extensive bancos & brick floor with radiant heat.  There is an obvious warmth about this home you will notice from the moment you walk through the front door.  For more Info Click Here!

The village of El Rito, one of the first Spanish settlements in New Mexico, is located on Hwy 554 with close access to Espanola, Ojo Caliente, and Abiquiu.  It is offers breath taking views of the Sangre de Cristos, Jemez Mountains, and the La Madera Mountains.   El Rito’s quiet quaintness stimulates artistic talents evidenced by the number of artists in the area.  The artists produce Spanish colonial furniture, pottery, fine art photography, handmade papers, handwoven textiles, traditional and contemporary tin art, retablos and santos, fine micaceous pottery, quilts and textiles, fine jewelry, and hand forged iron works.   An annual studio tour brings many people to enjoy El Rito.   The people who visit for the studio tour usually end up owning a piece of El Rito Real Estate.

History abounds in El Rito.  San Juan Nepomucene Catholic Church, one of the first churches in NM, was restored in the 1980’s.  Peter Van Dresser, author, architect, and builder, was one of the first to develop passive solar homes.  If you want to stimulate your mind you’ll find opportunities right next door.    Northern New Mexico College exists on the campus of the Spanish American Normal School in El Rito which was established in the early 1900s to train teachers for the state’s Spanish speaking population when  New Mexico was still  a Territory.  When New Mexico became a state in 1912, the school was identified as one of ten educational institutions to be supported by the state. Through the years it has offered secondary, technical vocational  and more recently four year college degrees.   In the 1980’s a certification program was established for the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Hospice Training Program which gave health care providers much needed expertise in dealing with death and dying.

Nothing compares to the sounds of a babbling brook.  El Rito Creek runs through the village providing water for irrigation for the farms and ranches as well as a place for wading children to frolic in the summer.  Some of the most beautiful El Rito homes for sale are along the El Rito Creek.  El Rito land for sale bordering the National Forest is a special treat for the outdoor enthusiast.   One of five National Forests in New Mexico, Carson National Forest offers up some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest.  Ranging in elevation from 6,000 feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest vantage point in New Mexico. Scattered throughout the property you will find the state tree of New Mexico, the Pinon.  The trees vary in height from 10-30 feet.  The tiny pine nuts were discovered as tasty food by the prehistoric Natives and Spanish when they came to New Mexico more than 400 years ago.  Along side the Pinon are High Mountain Cottonwood, Sage Brush, Juniper, Willow and many other varities of floral providing a rare treat in this arid Southwest climate.  Unobstructed views of the Sangre’s across the Rio Grande Valley take your breath away.

Traveling a few miles up Angel Canyon along El Rito Creek  you will be surrounded by aspens, pine, fir and spruce and may see deer, elk ,or even a bear.   At an elevation of 6900 feet the summers are cool.  You can play in the snow in the winter,  snowshoe down to El Farolito for a world renown green chile burrito, spicy salsa, and a cup of steaming hot chocolate flavored with cinnamon.

It is often difficult to find El Rito homes for sale that are situated alongside a creek with the lushness that this estate offers.  El Rito Real Estate varies from the limited availability of raw land to the popular double adobe homes in need of renovation.  This estate has been tastefully updated and awaits it’s new caretaker!  For more Info Click Here!

My Favorite Abiquiu Home for Sale

by Jarred Conley on November 21, 2009

La Riata del BarrancoOne of the reasons I think being a Real Estate Broker works so well for me is the social aspect of it.  I love having people call me up and ask me to look at their property they are thinking about listing- but it is a special treat when the person calling was your THIRD GRADE TEACHER.

I still remember getting out of my vehicle in her yard some 20 years later last summer- it was the familiar voice that made it all come right back!!  We all reminisced and talked for awhile and then it was time for the tour of their property.  I hadn’t prepared myself.

The property is quintessential Abiquiu.  Its Folky.  Its Green.  It has Views.  It has Grass.  It has Trees.

It has been Loved.

La Riata del Barranco in Abiquiu sits above the Rio Chama with truly the most amazing views of O’Keeffe Country.  It is secluded with only one neighbor further down the narrow dirt road and located on the Abiquiu Land Grant (Merced del Pueblo Abiquiu).  This amazing property consists of a beautiful home with over 2400 sq. feet and 4 acres of Northern New Mexico Heaven.

The home has three bedrooms all with their own individual, unique personality.  The master bedroom is ideal for long afternoon naps with thick adobe walls and custom wood shutters to keep out the sunlight.  It also has pine wood floors, cedar lined closets and a beautiful hand-hewn timber ceiling.  The turquoise guest room has hand painted hibiscus flowers circling around the top of the walls which pull your attention to the hand-hewn, original timbers in the ceiling.  The third bedroom is upstairs and has a whimsical feel that cradles you in the center of the room between the steep pitched walls of a classic northern New Mexico roof.  There are two bathrooms in the house, each with custom stonework in the showers and one with a wonderful Banco for extra storage.

The kitchen is a wonderful room with the old wood-burning cook stove still in place.  It has a very intimate feeling with a center island with sink, wood floors, pantries and windows set in the thick adobe walls inviting the natural light and sounds of Abiquiu to fill the room.

Radiant baseboard heating with five zones and a woodstove in the living room keep the home nice and warm all winter long.  The wood floor in the kitchen is also insulated.  There is a solar heated sunroom with a Trombe wall.  West exterior and interior adobe walls absorb heat from the low winter sun and release heat during cold nights.  Bathrooms have been located on the south end of the house and have never needed supplemental heat to prevent freezing.  Four inch urethane foam insulation has been sprayed on the west and north exterior walls to prevent heat gain in summer and heat loss in the winter.  A solar water heating system above laundry-furnace room feeds into a Bosch propane on-demand water heater.

Four flagstone patios designed for entertaining and endless hours of taking in the Abiquiu scenery.  ADA ramps included in the patios for people or wheelbarrows. Two fenced and leveled vegetable gardens.  Orchard of heirloom fruit trees, gardens of wildflowers and calla lilies offer peace and healing for the soul.  Irrigation flows downhill to water the terraces, the orchard and two irrigated fields.  Irrigation can be supplemented by the electric pump in the 55’ domestic water well.  This well carries the right to irrigate one acre of non-commercial crops, but with the acequia it is not needed.

Georgia O’Keeffe bought a home in Abiquiu because the mountain springs provided irrigation water for her gardens and trees. A spring ½ mile above this home provides water for lush gardens, trees, orchards, and flowers. The New Mexico State Engineer has assigned this ditch, the Ranchitos Ditch, a priority date of 1734.

flowersEons of time are available for exploration and study on the 4 acres.  The land is full of Native American Artifacts and astronomy petroglyphs are located in the Santa Fe National Forest, 15 miles above the house.  Step back in time as you walk a portion of the old wagon trail to Chama and Colorado on the property. Enjoy private hiking trails on your own property.  Outdoor activities are almost endless on and from this property.

Lay a blanket down on the grass near the orchard and be mesmerized by the breath-taking and awe-inspiring dark night sky.  Endless views of Cerrito Colorado, Sierra Negra, Copper Canyon, Abiquiu Mesa, and the Castillo White Cliffs will inspire the inner artist in you.

Forty-one bird species, such as the Common Nighthawk, White-breasted Nuthatch, Scott’s Oriole, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, and American Kestrel have been identified in the Hidden Garden and the arroyo behind the house. Mountain and Western Bluebirds raise their young in bird houses built for them. Bald Eagles, Great Blue Heron, Sandhill Cranes frequent the Rio Chama, which flows below the property. Bird species list available.  Seven different kinds of hummingbirds drink from feeders April-September.

Take advantage of the educational opportunities and beauty of Ghost Ranch Conference Center, 13 miles north.  http://www.ghostranch.org/

The Monastery of Christ in the Desert is located 29 miles north, perfect for attending services or a drive or rafting trip through the magnificent views of the Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River Wilderness Canyon.  http://christdesert.org/
